"TIM PRESTON: A $13 bargain, spicy fried chicken

Like everyone else, I was scrambling around last week trying to figure out what to do about getting my taxes done. When the thought, “What did I do last year?” entered my head, I remembered the place I had personally labeled “the best kept secret in town” — the Kentucky Department of Revenue office at the corner of 16th Street and Greenup Avenue in Ashland.

I took my documents inside, filled out a simple form and within seconds a friendly fellow from Rush was tapping our data into his computer. He asked many questions to determine if we qualified for any breaks or deductions and had my state and federal tax returns in a matter of minutes.

And, this was all done free of charge.

When it was over, it turned out I had to pay the state a whopping $13 and it occurred to me I’m getting a pretty good deal for that state tax money. Depending on how you look at it, especially if I had gone to a private tax-preparation service, I actually made a profit on the deal.

I made it back to the Krispy Krunchy Chicken Cajun Recipe restaurant inside the Clark’s Pump ‘n Shop at Winchester Avenue and 55th Street last week and will say it is the best “bang for the buck” meal I’ve had in a while.

Despite the massive catfish filets that were calling my name, I went to try the chicken, which I ordered with a honey-butter topped biscuit and a piece of their fried corn on the cob. With a drink, the whole meal came to just a little more than $5. Even though I walked in ready to eat, I will say they almost gave me more than I could eat — almost.

Served on a real plate and with real silverware, it was a great lunch. Watching the ladies behind the counter, I accused them of “working like the boss was watching,” but they just giggled and indicated they weren’t even particularly busy at that time.

I’ll take my wife (who knows good catfish when she tastes it) the next time I pop in, and personally plan to try the Boudin Bites — fried balls of Cajun-style sausage with rice. And, I’ll probably get some more of that fried corn on the cob and sample the Jambalaya as well.

The manager mentioned they’re also planning daily specials in the days ahead, and mentioned several entrees that definitely got my attention. The place is open 24-hours a day, and is a convenient stop for those traveling along U.S. 23. They do ask customers with large orders to call (606) 739-6181 in advance and otherwise take care of their customers one at a time as they enter."

Attempted ATM Robbery at Rt. 3 BP at 10:24 AM

BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- The Boyd County Sheriff needs your help in identifying the three people who tried to steal an ATM from a convenience store.

It happened early Saturday morning around 4 a.m. at the BP Gas Station on State Route 3.Deputy Steve Lake says the three suspects broke into the store through the front door. Once inside, they tried to remove the ATM by wrapping a towing chain around it and then attaching the chain to a green pickup truck parked outside.

After several unsuccessful attempts, the suspects fled the scene.

Investigators believe the truck was stolen from Prichard Law Care in Ashland several hours earlier.

Anyone with information, is asked to call the Boyd County Sheriff at 606-739-5135.

Happy Anniversary to the Bar Code! at 9:43 AM

"The new doodle from Google marks the 57th anniversary of the day the first patent was made on the bar code.

Granted to American inventors Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver three years after it was filed, patent number 2,612,994 was for a pattern of concentric circles, rather than the set of straight lines used today.

Their research began in 1948 after Mr Silver, a graduate student at the Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, overheard a local food chain boss asking one of the institute's deans to design a system for reading product data automatically.

Mr Silver and Mr Woodland, a fellow graduate student and teacher at Drexel, first tried using patterns of ink that glowed under ultraviolet light, but it proved too expensive and unreliable.

Mr Woodland then came up with the linear bar code, and later replaced the lines with circles so that they could be scanned from any angle. The pair patented their “bull’s eye” design the next year.

The bar code was first trialled in 1966, and in 1970 the familiar Universal Product Code (UPC) design, still used around the world, was agreed on as an industry standard.

The first item to be scanned using UPC was a packet of Wrigley’s chewing gum at a supermarket in Troy, Ohio, in June 1974.

Neither inventor made a fortune on the idea because they sold the patent in 1952 for a moderate sum before it was commercialized.

Mr Silver never even witnessed the bar code’s success, having died in a car crash in 1962."

Our Category Manager, Mark McCarty, has been busy redesigning the layouts in some of our stores. One addition/change he has made are the new pop displays. The display in the picture is located at our BP in Oak Hill, OH.

Hazmat Safety Meeting at 10:53 PM

The drivers and some other employees for John W. Clark Oil and Bulk Plans Inc., met early Saturday morning, August 29th, for their Hazmat Safety Meeting. It is required as a refresher course every three years. Some of the topics of discussion were driving safety and all the Hazmat rules and regulations. The meeting was held at the Ashland Plaza Hotel.
